summary

+ This project began its developed as a collaboration between artists Kyd Campbell and Petko Dourmana, under the conceptual guidance of curator Galia Dimitrova in Sofia, Bulgaria and with the technical support of Stoycho Stanchev and Petar Slavov at Interspace Media Art Center.

+ CT_BT_GRAFFITI is a project with sends ‘spam’ like images/sound/video to the mobile telecommunication devices of unsuspecting audience members. The bank of digital files consists of subversive media, its content is infinitely flexible and created uniquely for each installation context.

project description

+ CT_BT_Graffiti borrows from possibilities of public expression and influence and presents them as veritable networking tools. It has the ability to do this in a manner that is more accessible to the public because it makes use of familiar technological devices: mobile phones and other portable telecommunication devices. One of the common features of mobile devices is an embedded Bluetooth chip, which allows for short-range (up to 100 meters) wireless contact with others using this technology. Visitors who have Bluetooth technology on their cell phones and other mobile devices are invited to activate it and to explore and collectively inhabit a virtual space.

Similarly to the way in which one can consider graffiti to be an assault on individuals that are confronted by it in their public spaces, an individual roaming around with an open Bluetooth connection is susceptible to receive communication and information that they were unprepared for.

The site-specific installation will include images, text, video and audio files related to the physical location of the transmission node and participants will be able to also add their own files to the database or may simply become aware of the communication potentials of the technology that they carry in their pockets and begin their own personal area networks.
